What is the Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund is the primary source of discretionary spending at the Law School and it pays for many of the activities that make a good school a great one. The Gifts to the Law Foundation provide the margin between a budget that barely meets current needs and one that enhances the educational experience.

Why make a gift?

Why is the UMKC School of Law increasingly dependent on private support?

The combination of outstanding faculty, students, and academic programs is the essential foundation upon which the future success of the law school must be built. Today, the state of Missouri provides less than 10%? of the law school’s funding. The support of our alumni and friends is crucial to the future success of the law school.

As state funding has declined, tuition costs have risen dramatically. More than 90% of our students receive some form of financial aid, and the typical student graduates with nearly $55,000 of indebtedness. Private support for loan repayment assistance, scholarships, and fellowships is crucial to the law school’s effort to compete with peer institutions to recruit a talented and diverse student body.

The law school faces similar challenges in attracting and retaining distinguished legal scholars. The Law Foundation provides summer faculty research supplements. Such support promotes legal scholarship.

Clinical Support – The School of Law clinics provide students clinical education experiences while reaching out to the underserved in the local community through the Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic, the Kansas City Tax Clinic, the Child & Family Services Clinic and the Midwestern Innocence Project.

Capital Improvements – The campaign for the renovation of the courtroom is still receiving contributions. Two of the classrooms have been modernized and made accessible, but two still are in need of such improvements. Adding two smaller size classrooms would greatly increase the flexibility of scheduling.
