Professor Hood, a member of the California, Iowa and Missouri bars, received his B.B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Iowa. He earned his LL.M. degree in taxation from New York University in 1967. He spent two years in private practice with a large San Francisco law firm, and one year teaching at an Oregon law school.

Since joining the faculty in 1970, Professor Hood has been an active scholar. In March, 1998, he co-authored a book with Professor John J. Mylan of Southern Methodist University School of Law and Timothy O. Sullivan of Foulston Siefkin, LLP, of Wichita, Kansas entitled: Closely Held Businesses in Estate Planning (Aspen Law & Business, 1998). He has co-authored another two- volume book and annual supplements with Prof. Mylan: Federal Taxation of Close Corporations (West Group). He is a past recipient of a University of Kansas City Faculty Fellowship Award and, in 1982 and 1984, was named the Law School mentor for the Arthur Mag Fellow. In 1993, he received the Pearson Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2007, he was selected as a Kansas City Legal Leader by the Kansas City Daily Record.

Professor Hood served as Director of the UMKC Graduate Tax Program until his retirement in September, 2007. During his tenure at UMKC, he developed the Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic and the Kansas City Tax Clinic, which provide hands on experience for students while serving the larger community. He also founded the annual law school talent show known as the $1.98 Law Revue. In 2001, he developed a summer law program in Ireland, and continues to serves at its Co-Director. In 2003, Professor Hood initiated an annual Bar Prep program that dramatically increased the bar passage rate at the law school.

Professor Hood has taught numerous seminars for Continuing Legal Education programs across the country and has held visiting teaching positions at the Academy of International Taxation in Taipei, Taiwan, the University of Iowa, Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, Syracuse University, Hofstra University, the University of Miami, and University College, Dublin in Ireland.

During his long career at UMKC, Professor Hood has taught 21 different courses with an emphasis in taxation, property, and business organizations. He retired as a full-time professor in September of 2007 and was granted Emeritus status. He was then rehired as part-time professor and now teaches two or three courses each year from the following group of courses: Corporate Taxation I and II, State & Local Tax, International Taxation and Taxation of Property Transactions.
